Recovering Banquet Cushions – The Good, The Bad, The Ugly and The Frustrating

So you think you can recover cushions…… so did I…….

You’ve seen the pink interior.

Here’s a close up of the eye pleasing fabric the manufacturer chose.

Pretty, right?dinette

Actually, I don’t think it’s too bad. It’s just that it was E-V-E-R-Y-W-H-E-R-E and not compatible with any other pattern. We want to down play the pink and that meant that this pattern needed to go.

Let’s be honest. I’m a crafter, not a seamstress. But I’m a hard headed crafter. Somehow I believe that there’s not too many things that I can’t do or conquer. I’m a fool sometimes.

My mother taught me to sew when I was in second grade — seven, I was seven years old.  Truly, she tried to teach me but even at such a young age, we discovered that we did not speak the same language. Knowing how being able to sew helped her family, my mother handed me off to her best friend who taught me to sew.  Over the years, I’ve realized that sewing clothes or other things that need precision is not my thing. You’d think that I’d heeded that knowledge when I decided that I could recover the cushions.

Nope.

I read these posts:

And watched this video, over and over again:

I combined thought processes and decided to follow the tube method on the first cushion and after struggling with it and swearing — a lot — I ended up with cutting all the panels, putting the zipper in one of the narrow panels (using the zippered pouch method) and then sewing panel to panel and then adding the ends — using the seams to help keep the ends from twisting. I’m really thankful I was smart enough not to choose a striped material…..

It was a maddening experience — because I’m not a seamstress. I will say that the last cushion came out WAY better than the first…..but I’m too hard headed to rip out the first one and do it all over again.

So, if you visit the camper, one of the cushions in the banquet is not like the others — and I don’t care.

Needless to say, I didn’t take pictures of the process. Those pictures would have shown the blood and the tears. It wasn’t pretty but I did get it done.  I’m not doing the couch. I hear Target has some great slip covers for sale…..

But recovering the cushions and the supporting pieces made a HUGE difference in the feel of the camper.  I think you’ll agree!
