Camping Trip #3 — James M. Robb Campground at Colorado River State Park

The James M. Robb Campground is right along Interstate Highway 70, near Palisade, Colorado. We were wary of the highway’s proximity but it was only one of two sites still available to us late bookers.  We were pleasantly surprised! It’s a lovely campground. Yes, occasionally you’d hear a truck but the highway noise was minimal. There is an active set of train tracks on the far side of the river and that first 4:00 am train startled us but it’s amazing how fast we didn’t hear the train anymore.

The grounds are fairly flat and open. The campground was full over Memorial Day weekend but we never felt like we were crowded. It was wonderful to see kids on their bikes riding around with their fishing poles. (This state park has three fishing holes and one swimming hole.) And there were flat open spaces where you could play catch, or frisbee or even meditate.

One day we went into nearby Palisade and stopped at the Peach Tree Distillers. Their Bloody Marys are to die for! There’s a food truck to order food from, so we sat on the patio sipping our drinks, munching on awesome french fries. Great place!  I hear their tours are fun. We were there too early to see for ourselves.

James M. Robb campground is in a canyon so it can be breezy and blustery. Our awning got it’s workout, set up, taken down, set up, taken down.  Because of those canyon walls, cell reception is spotty — at best.  It was a really nice break from connectivity.  We have a cabinet of games to entertain ourselves.  John is starting to find his groove in Boggle.

We enjoyed our mornings.  We had our chairs set up outside, sipping our coffee side by side. Such a nice way to spend time together.
